Happy Wednesday! The Insecure Writers’ Group is a group of writers offering motivation and encouragement to all those taking on the challenges of writing. Every month the ISWG sponsors a blog hop where writers can blog about a topic related to overcoming obstacles and exploring various aspects of the writing journey. If you’d like to participate in a future hop you can join here. It’s always a great experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing and sharing with other writers. Every month there is an optional discussion question, and this month the question is the following:
February 1 Discussion Question: If you are an Indie author, do you make your own covers or purchase them? If you publish trad, how much input do you have about what goes on your cover?
I like this question a lot, because it talks about something I’ve thought about myself, many times. I haven’t finished my book yet, but I’m coming to the end of my writing process so the question of a cover has been playing on my mind. Would I try to make my own cover? Or would I prefer to purchase it?
The answer is, I don’t know!
I love to draw. I sell my art and I love making mugs, digital cards, stickers etc in my home studio. It’s one of the things I enjoy most in the world. During my free time I love drawing scenes from my books, and seeing them come to life. To design a book cover for my book would be very exciting, and very fulfilling.
But on the other hand, I don’t know anything about designing a book cover! My art is cute and childlike, but my book is more serious. I really worry I wouldn’t be able to express myself well, and I wouldn’t be happy with what I came up with. A big part of me feels that purchasing a cover from an experienced book cover designer is the way to go. But I just don’t know. I’m going to have to really think this one over 😅 It’s hard to let go of the idea of doing the designing myself. But it’s daunting nonetheless.
How about you? Do you have a hand in designing your own covers? If so, what do you feel about the process?
Hoping that you’re having a really awesome week. Halfway to the weekend! Talk soon,
Winter
