December 1 ISWG Blog Hop: What Stresses you About Writing?

Hello and Happy Wednesday! The Insecure Writers’ Group is a group of writers offering motivation and encouragement to all those taking on the challenges of writing. Every month the ISWG sponsors a blog hop where writers can blog about a topic related to overcoming obstacles and exploring various aspects of the writing journey. If you’d like to participate in a future hop you can join here. It’s always a great experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing and sharing with other writers.

I’m posting kind of late today, it’s the first opportunity I’ve had to sit down and write the whole day. So here goes!

Every month there is an optional discussion question, and this month the question is the following:

December 1 Discussion Question: In your writing, what stresses you the most? What delights you?

Writing is stressful and infuriating. Writing is also exciting, and fun and sometimes even relaxing. With my writing, I find myself experiencing all of these emotions and feelings, sometimes all in the same writing session.

As far as what I most enjoy about my writing, I love conversations and dialogue. I enjoy visualizing and daydreaming about the conversations between characters. Where are they? What are their expressions, their feelings, their voices? I love playing the scenes in my head and writing it as I imagine things playing out.

That leads me to the aspect of writing that stresses me the most. After I have this great dialogue written, oftentimes I’ll realize that I’ve wandered far away from any outline and now have way more words than I wanted and have rambled on and on. Fitting all of these interactions between characters into my book and having a well-structured narrative are challenges for me. I hate cutting things out, and would rather try to make it all fit like some sort of strange puzzle. I have a sort of disorganized brain I think haha.

What stresses you out the most about writing? What to do you enjoy the most and consider to be your forte in the writing process? Let me know in the comments!

Wishing you lots of happy, stress-free writing,

Winter

  1. My biggest enjoyment with writing is the use of words. As in, how they sound together, or sometimes pulled apart. I love it when I have crafted a sentence that sings, and I love it when I find a word out that exactly matches what I’m trying to convey.
The hardest part of writing for me is ‘making stuff up’! My imagination is either blocked or absent or just really small because I find it very very difficult to write fiction. Give me a plot and I can string words around it but thinking of that idea in the first place is incredibly tough for me.

    1. I love that! I think that sounds wonderful, finding the perfect words to really convey the meaning and the sound you want for your writing.

As for the ideas, I understand how you feel, it can be really hard to come up with ideas for the plot. I’ve had bad writers block lately and feel like I am running out of ideas!
