Happy Wednesday! The Insecure Writers’ Group is a group of writers offering motivation and encouragement to all those taking on the challenges of writing. Every month the ISWG sponsors a blog hop where writers can blog about a topic related to overcoming obstacles and exploring various aspects of the writing journey. If you’d like to participate in a future hop you can join here. It’s always a great experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing and sharing with other writers. Every month there is an optional discussion question, and this month the question is the following:
June 7 question – If you ever did stop writing, what would you replace it with?
When I was in school, I often would get pulled aside by my teachers whenever they would see my notebook. I took pretty good notes in class, that wasn’t the problem. The issue was that I’ve always loved to doodle in the margins. I used to fill the edges of the paper with sketches—one day drawing a tropical island, the next day drawing an underwater scene with mermaids, one time an entire Santa’s Village at the North Pole. Even when they would tell me to stop, I still found myself drawing and then making up stories about the little characters.
Now, many years later, I create designs and digital art as a job and still make up stories about the characters. I never got over the habit!
So in answer to the question, if I stopped writing I would replace it with more drawing and creating digital art. I think drawing is absolutely an act of storytelling, and it feels like a natural complement to the act of writing words on a paper. An image can tell a story in the most magnificent and powerful way.
How about you? If you replaced writing with another pastime or job, what would it be?
Wishing you an inspired day of writing,
-Winter
That’s what I do too: I create book covers. I’m not a professional, like you. I just do it for fun: a sort of visual storytelling. For myself, mostly.

My son used to do that. He used those doodles to cope with life’s stress. He still does.

I still doodle in my journals, mostly travel journals, but also take lots of notes when attending lectures of any kinds (and doodle there too). This kind of happy-ever-after was fun to read, though writing still seems to come first. May your doodles bring you new stories/insights as well.
